Had a lovely encounter with a patient the other day.

56 year old male who had lost his heart function, in my estimation due to an irregular heart beat that had gone amok like a runaway train. The causes were numerous. I had seen in him in the hospital a few months prior, and on his discharge as he was waiting to be wheeled out to his car, I had put my hand on his shoulder and told him “ Trust me, I can get your heart function back, do not lose hope. “ He nodded and left.

Fast forward, I saw him in the office. I had reviewed his updated tests and arrived to the patient’s door, and as I walked in I said to him “ Whose your daddy?” Laughingly.

He laughed back, “ Hope you are ! “

I informed him that his heart function had gone from 20% to normal at 60%. He was shaking with joy.

“ I promised you that once I got you back in normal rhythm, to have the patience with the right medications to change the heart and avoidance of caffeine, alcohol and smoking, lose the weight, get exercising and keep up with hydration, change the diet, and you will get back to normal.” I remarked.

“ You did doc and I lost 30 pounds and not a sip of alcohol. “ he replied.

I burst out in tears with the news, having not been able to keep his emotions back too long and leaped up and hugged me. Hugs, hugs, hugs. We were both in tears. I was just so thrilled that the plan worked, he was on his way to a healthy life again, and his heart had repaired itself. He was happy that he was back on the right track with a new lease on life. He had indeed ignored the knocking of death’s door in the hospital. He came close.

“ Doc I do not know how, but you did it.”

“ you did it my friend, I just gave you the right ingredients needed to get you planted to grow stronger, I am glad you stepped through my door, instead of death’s”.

“ I am a holistic cardiologist but I know a thing or 2 about cardiology. I am a modern medicine cardiologist but I do know a thing or 2 about holistic medicine “ I said as we sat back down in our chairs, with wet eyes.

We made a solid prescription of lifestyle for the future of his health plan and we parted ways to meet again in 6 months.

The heart knows best, if we trust its wisdom. What happens when we do not trust its innate ability to repair itself or for that matter the body’s ability to heal, we find that illness prevails. I love the heart, not just as a pump, but in the metaphysical sense it lies at the center of the mind, body and consciousness axis. A powerhouse of wisdom and a guardian of love.

………….

I love you
