The greatest medicine. Surprisingly enough it is not about popping pills, as most of us automatically gravitate to when the need arises. A cough? Pop a pill. A headache? Pop a pill. A cold? Pop a pill. Pain ? Pop a pill.

We are ingrained to pill popping habits. It is a part of our culture. So much so that even as a practicing cardiologist, I get a funny look by some patients when I suggest lifestyle changes for their ailment and they ask “ No pill for that instead ?”

Allow me to elaborate. The body is unique. It has the ability to heal all by itself through its various mechanisms of repair. The immune system, the nervous systems, the hormones are constantly at work to keep the cells and body in a homeostatic harmony at all times. As we break bone, we create bone, as we break neurons, we make neurons, we break blood cells we make blood cells. This is a part of our nature. It is when the balance is upset that illness occurs.

So the body knows how to create its own medicine through manipulation of hormones levels for whatever the stimuli. We can help it along by altering habits that may make us sick.

-Where the processed foods, and adulterated sugars can harm this equilibrium, we can choose healthier food options, and whole nutrition.

– Where sedentary lifestyles harm our cardiovascular health, we can choose to exercise and build muscle tone and strengthen our bones.

-Where excessive screen time can damage our eyes and mental health, we can opt for limited time and more outdoor grounding activities like walks in nature, conversations with friends, hugs.

– Where destructive behaviors harm our mind, body and heart we can bring ourselves back to a healing center with introspection, meditation, and authenticity.

Breath work is another great tool for self healing that changes the alkalinity of our body to aide in a faster return to balance, along with diet and exercise along with a host of other alternatives that are not pharmaceutically based.

The greatest medicine of all is to teach people how not to need medicine.
