Short Funny story.

So the other day went to Boston for an overnight christmassy trip. Went to the Prudential tower, a magnificent mall festively decorated with an amazing view at the top of the tower on the 52nd floor. It’s more of an observatory and well worth the vistas.

While walking around I came upon one window where a rather tall gentleman was standing and he was chatting to these older women. I only overheard one word. “ Westfield”. I immediately turned out and said “ Westfield Massachusetts?” All three looked at me, and nodded.

Now I have no idea what they were talking about prior to my interruption, but we all got engaged. “ Did you say Westfield ?” I confirmed.

The gentleman smiled or at least what I could tell was a smile as his imposing mustache lifted up. “ Yes I am from Westfield.” I looked at the other ladies.

The First Lady replied “ We are from Westfield too”

The Second Lady chimed in “ Yes I was born there, but we both live in north Carolina now, we are here to visit the sights for Christmas”.

“ Now what are the odds, that 5 people ( including my son) all from the same town show up in a city 100 miles away on top of a building?” I said out loud.

We all laughed, and shared our own stories of our little town. Where we all once lived, and what we did there, including the stories of the old hospital where one of the conversationalists was born over 70 years ago.

We disbanded a few minutes later, with warm hearts and seasonal greetings offered. I stood there a little while longer, looking out at the horizon and taking in the view of the miniature buildings. What are the odds indeed. How small is our world? How big did we think it was just less than 100 years ago? We can transport ourselves in less than 24 hours to locations across the world. Yet, we cannot connect with another human being at a heart space level due to our own biases and judgments.

Our perceptions prevent us from seeing our similarities and we stay stuck observing our differences. At a cosmic level, we are infinitesimal beings in comparison yet believe we are all important in our teeny tiny microcosm. Imagine how our egos keep us apart, and it takes life’s synchronicities to wake us up to what is possible and open our hearts to connectivity.

So the next time you are at the gym, or on a bus, or plane, look at the person next to you, strike a conversation without fear, and see what you both have in common. I have met a lot of interesting people this way, only to find similar stories or paths taken, and even same places of interest from the past. Each person is a reflection of ourselves, just different waves of the same ocean making ripples about the earth.

There are a lot of things that unite us, more than what divide us, if we choose to look.

………………

I love you
