10000 steps a day.
I am sure you have heard of this figure. It is not a magical number but instead a valuable guideline to reach. As a cardiologist I am constantly telling my patients to move their bodies. If someone cannot run, then walk. It is not rocket science. It is not as glamorous as the Olympics nor as simple as taking a pill, it is simpler than that. Just move.
It does not work if we sit around all day and then an hour prior to bed try to walk 10000 steps. It is a constant maneuvering of the body that leads to benefits. What are these benefits?
Cardiovascular Health:
It Improves heart function and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke.
Weight Management:
Increased steps burns calories, that helps maintain and loss of weight.
Musculoskeletal Health:
Doing anything against gravity strengthens leg and core muscles, improving balance, and the reduction of risk of falls.
Metabolic Health:
By constantly moving and burning calories, increased steps helps regulate blood sugar levels, and reduces insulin resistance.
Mental Health:
Exercising releases endorphins, which increases good mood and reduces stress.
It also improves cognitive function and reduces the risk of depression and anxiety.
It improves sleep quality and boosts the immune system.
Promoting well being is key to evade certain types of cancer and creating healthy habits.
Practice what you preach doc?
Yes indeed. I make sure I am active and exercise regularly. Even my rest days from training is predicated on maintaining steps through walking, stretching/yoga.
Sleep, hydration, meditation, stretching, exercise, nutrition, breath work all are key components to maintain longevity, strength and vitality. The fountain of youth has always been in our hands and not locked away in secret caverns for treasure hunters to find.

I love you
